A UK heatwave — defined by the Met Office as three or more consecutive days above 25°C — creates hydration conditions that most people are not prepared for. The combination of elevated ambient temperature, high humidity, and increased time outdoors can push daily fluid requirements 50–80% above a normal day's baseline for some people.
The problem is that thirst — your usual indicator that you need to drink — becomes less reliable in extreme heat. At high temperatures, the body's thermoregulatory demands can outpace the thirst mechanism, meaning you can be losing fluid faster than you feel it. This is particularly pronounced in older adults, people who are not acclimatised to the heat, and anyone exercising outdoors.
What the numbers actually look like

These are estimates, not clinical prescriptions. Individual sweat rates vary considerably — some people lose twice as much fluid per hour of exercise as others at identical intensity. But they illustrate the scale of the adjustment needed and why a fixed daily target set in February is almost certainly wrong by July.
Why thirst fails you in the heat
The thirst mechanism is calibrated for ordinary conditions. In extreme heat, several things happen that undermine its reliability. First, sweat loss can reach 1–2 litres per hour during outdoor activity — a rate the thirst signal cannot keep pace with. Second, the body prioritises core temperature management over fluid conservation signals, meaning you may feel fine until you are meaningfully dehydrated. Third, acclimatisation takes 10–14 days, and most UK residents experience only occasional extreme heat — meaning the body never fully adapts its fluid regulation for these conditions.
The practical consequence: in a heatwave, you cannot rely on drinking when you feel thirsty. You need a target and a schedule.
Heatwave hydration: practical rules
- Add at least 500ml–1L to your normal daily target on any day above 28°C, before accounting for activity
- Front-load the morning — drink 500ml before 9am, before the heat builds
- Drink before going outside, not just after — pre-loading reduces the rate at which you fall behind
- Cold water is marginally more effective at lowering core temperature than warm water, and is also absorbed slightly faster
- Electrolytes matter more at high sweat volumes — on the second and third consecutive hot day, plain water alone may not be sufficient, particularly if you are exercising
- Check your urine — pale straw colour is adequate; dark yellow or amber means you are already behind
